1 thing: I agree :-D But maybe its just my area, but its not just rp-ers etc. Many pagans and wiccans i know join that sect/faith/religion (sorry I'm not wiccan so if I offend you, I apologize) are attracted to that area b/c of the new ideas. I'm not saying they all are, just some of the younger kiddies like the highschool goths.
Hi. this is totally unrelated to the post, but just was reading the board, do we use the same name or was this made from my account somehow or just random? just curious i've been using this name as a pen name since i was in elementary school :-p...so it's neat to see someone else with the same one.
Wow, for anyone who read the above comment, i'm such a dumbhead. I haven't used this account in a couple of years and didn't realize how old the first comment was. I thought someone was on my account somehow, more likely i posted a loooong time ago and forgot.
I think there is more than two possible realities here, between a choice of "mere" wish-fulfilling role-play (and do you not know how much magic there is in masques and foolery?) and the risk of offending the 'si'.
Well, the si, or sidhe or elven-kind as a whole are indeed very real and no more safe to be around in general than we are - but no less, either; while they are different to a degree, they are to a greater degree similar in that they mostly wish the things we wish; a comfortable place, good food, the comforts of family - and all too often, a little more power than they truly deserve, and without just recompense.
Yes, it is possible for a skilled elven shaman or mage to impose upon one here for their use, I'm sure this is rather common to find among the Otherkin community. But more usually, and more appropriately, it is an alliance of sorts.
But it's not either or.
It is *entirely* possible for an elf to be born here, or cross over in one of several ways, including simply stepping into a vacant body.
Indeed, there is no truly significant difference between a human and an elf beyond the cosmetic; we are truly all one large extended gene pool. The difference is not one of nature, but of context.
Take an average Caucasian human and plonk them in the Misty Realm and they would be immediately recognized as being (variously) a True Elf, Plains Elf or perhaps a Forest Elf. Blacks and Asiatics correspond fairly well with a few other common "Elven" races.
Not all Elves have pointed ears, you know. :) Even within "races" that normally do, there's a great deal of variation.
But even those who do - well, allow me to remind you that a chimpanzee is 98% genetically identical.
anyway, that's my observation; believe it or don't. Lore is a nice way of saying "doctrine", as you use it, and "doctrine" is a truth that has no reality outside of a religious circle, yet is something that those who have it wish to control. Or very often. And very often, said doctrine has never been reality-checked, not within the last century or so.
By observation, let me observe that there is more to the spiritual ecology than just "land spirits." Moreover, almost every traditional class of spirit is narrowly defined from a human experiential perspective, through the lens of ritual and tradition. In general, such views bear as much resemblance to actual, working elves in the Misty Realm as do their legends about us.
(One of their most common bits of elven lore about Humans, more or less equivalent to our Leprechaun, bears an uncanny resemblance to Elmer Fudd.)
So while caution and respect are wise - indeed to a higher degree than the poster implies - it's in many ways the same exact situation as would apply if you wished to stroll through South-central LA or the restricted areas of the Amazon basin. Do your homework, but keep an open mind; the anthropologist who gives you all the advice you are supposed to follow ain't gonna be the one getting shot at. :>
Everything you've just said is everything I want to learn. I would be more than gracious if you were to even give me the titles of the books I had to read for years before even having a clue. I'm not sure if my knowledge goes beyond recent tales of faery because I haven't been following up on contemporary authors. Ask me anything you wish and I will answer with what I know. I just really want to know everything I can about Faery, it's a subject that has had my attention for as long as I can remember. Please e-mail me at TheMallionator@hotmail.com
